MICHELSEN LANDS FIRST SPEEDWAY GP WIN IN LANDSHUT

German racer Kai Huckenbeck says being a full-time FIM Speedway Grand Prix star brings less pressure than a wild-card call-up as he prepares for tonight’s Trans MF FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut.Huckenbeck races his first home event as a full member of the SGP line-up and he goes into the meeting on a huge high after reaching two straight semi-finals in Croatia and Warsaw.The former Landshut rider is seventh in the Speedway GP standings on 20 points and very much among the series’ in-form riders.Huckenbeck’s best results in three SGP appearances last year were the five championship points the scored in both Vojens and Torun, where he raced as a series substitute rider. He also scored one as a wild card for the night at the German round in Teterow.While some riders feel being a series substitute or wild card brings less pressure, the former German champion says knowing he will be appearing in all 11 Speedway GP rounds this year has helped him to relax into SGP life.He said: “I don’t know how to explain it, but I feel like there’s not so much pressure. Of course, I am taking it very seriously, but I am having so much fun and that’s when I enjoy it.“When I was a reserve or wild-card rider for one GP, I always felt so much pressure. I thought about every heat and every mistake and every move I would make. It’s quite different now.“Of course, you can always have a bad day. But I think that’s normal. For sure I will have one as well, and hopefully it’s just one! But it’s not so much pressure.”Huckenbeck scored 11 championship points at round one in Croatia, with Aussie star Jason Doyle rounding him for second place in the early stages of their semi-final clash to deny him final qualification. He then crashed out of Warsaw semi one after taking a knock from Doyle on turn one, before running into Jack Holder. Huckenbeck was not fit to take his place in the rerun, but still scored nine championship points and is pleased with reaching two semis on the spin.“I didn’t expect it, to be honest,” he said. “I was a bit unlucky at the last one in Warsaw, but, overall, I am happy. I have made two semis in two GPs, and who would have expected that before?“It’s so much fun riding in the GPs. I really enjoy it at the moment and hopefully it continues like that.”Huckenbeck is setting his sights on qualification for the 2025 Speedway GP series. He will race in an SGP qualifier at German club Abensberg on Monday, battling for a spot in the FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice on October 4.But if he maintains his current scoring, he could make it by finishing in the 2024 Speedway GP World Championship’s top six.It would be the ultimate way to defy the doubters who questioned his selection as a Speedway GP permanent wild card. Huckenbeck said: “For sure there were many people who said, ‘What is the German doing here?!’&nbsp;“But I have proved I should be here and right now I am on a good level. Hopefully I can keep it up; that’s the most important thing. Hopefully I can surprise a bit more in the future. My goal is the top six, so I need to keep it up for the whole season. Consistency is the key, I guess.”

HUCKENBECK: REGULAR SPEEDWAY GP SPOT BRINGS LESS PRESSURE

Former FIM Speedway World Cup bronze medallist Andrey Kudriashov has passed away following a brave fight with skin cancer.Kudriashov raced for the Russian national side and was part of their team that claimed a bronze medal in the 2017 FIM SWC Final in Leszno. He also won the Russian Championship four times in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019.The 32-year-old, who was born in Balakovo, put his career on hold as he battled skin cancer and doctors were forced to amputate his left leg in May 2023 in a bid to quell the spread of the disease.Kudriashov left his base in Poland to return to Russia for treatment, but his former Polish club Opole confirmed his passing this morning.As well as racing for Opole during his Polish career, Kudriashov competed for Krakow, Grudziadz, Lublin, Bydgoszcz, Lodz, Gniezno and Latvian team Daugavpils.The FIM Speedway family sends its condolences to Kudriashov’s family and friends at this time.

Great Britain star Robert Lambert admits falling short of the semis in Croatia fired him up for a final charge in Warsaw as he bids for another big night at the Trans MF FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on Saturday.Lambert was on the verge of exiting the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw in semi-final one, but he snatched second place from Croatia winner Jack Holder on the run to the line.The former European champion went on to claim third spot in the final to move up to fourth place in the Speedway GP World Championship on 29 points.While Lambert is keen to end his wait for an SGP win in Landshut, he admits his Warsaw podium was a fine step towards it, especially after his semi-final heartbreak at the opening round in Donji Kraljevec.He said: “The vision of being third in the semi-final was not good. I was very angry at seeing that prospect again in Warsaw. I think that helped me find that little bit extra and I managed to do it.“Maybe it was good to miss out on that final in Croatia and get a little bit angrier for Warsaw. It also meant I could think about the process of why I didn’t get into the final and analyse a little bit deeper into it. On all our failures, we build towards success. That’s what we have done.“We need to be consistent throughout the whole season. There has been a lot of pressure and talk about my first Speedway GP win. There was a lot of pressure on me in the first round to go and do it straight off.“It was awesome to come third in Warsaw and be on the podium. It’s nice to get a trophy in the second GP. Next time, let’s hope I’ll be No.1.”Lambert heads to Landshut hoping for more good memories in Germany – the country where he made his professional debut as a 14-year-old after taking out a German licence to get a head-start in his racing development due to British speedway’s 16-year age limit for its professional leagues and 15-year minimum age for the National League.He hopes visiting Landshut more than many of his rivals could play to his advantage. He said: “I’ve ridden at Landshut a couple of times and that’s more than a few of the other boys in the series.&nbsp;“It’s a new one on the calendar. It’s a bit different to most of the other tracks. It’s a pretty flat and big track. We need to be prepared for everything, get ready for it and try to get some more points on that board.”Lambert can’t wait to see his many German fans as he continues his rise from teenage rookie to Speedway GP contender.He added: “I’m sure there will be a few fans out there who will be cheering me on. That’s going to be nice. There will be fans and people I haven’t seen for a few years with me not racing in Germany anymore. It will be nice to see those people. When I was there, I was just starting and now I am in the GP. It will be good to be back – I am looking forward to it.”

LAMBERT SPURRED FOR FINAL PUSH

SGP2 silver medallist Damian Ratajczak is set to undergo surgery in Denmark after suffering a fractured femur in Grinsted’s Speedwayligaen match at Holsted on Wednesday.Ratajczak – who was among the favourites for this year’s SGP2 FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship series – crashed in heat seven of his Speedwayligaen debut, which saw Grindsted lose 43-41 away to Holsted.The Pole was taken to hospital for checks and his PGE Ekstraliga club Leszno confirmed news of the injury via their official social media channels. Ratajczak will undergo surgery on Thursday.The Leszno post read: “The results of tests conducted after Damian Ratajczak's fall in the Danish league confirmed a fracture of the femur. Currently, our rider is being provided with comprehensive medical care. Tomorrow Damian will undergo surgery.”Ratajczak ended the 2023 season on a huge high after winning the FIM SGP2 of Denmark – Vojens to claim the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship silver medal.But the injury looks set to rule Ratajczak out of this season’s SGP2 line-up, with the qualifiers taking place on June 8 and the series-opening FIM SGP2 of Sweden – Malilla on Friday, June 14.Everyone involved in FIM Speedway wishes Damian a speedy and successful recovery.

RATAJCZAK SET FOR SURGERY IN DENMARK

German racer Kai Huckenbeck hopes his home-track knowledge pays dividends as he gets ready for the Trans MF FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut this Saturday.Huckenbeck is in his first full season as a full-time Speedway GP rider and has already reached two semi-finals in as many rounds, leaving him seventh in the SGP World Championship on 20 points.He will be determined to chase his first Speedway GP final as Landshut hosts its first SGP round since 1997 on Saturday.Huckenbeck competed for the club in the Polish leagues in recent years, before they were forced to drop from the newly-named Metalkas Ekstraliga 2 into the National League after the second tier was taken over by the PGE Ekstraliga.Having played a key role in establishing Landshut as a force in the Polish leagues before his winter move to Bydgoszcz, Huckenbeck hopes his local knowledge will pay dividends on a track his SGP rivals have rarely visited.He said: “I really like the track in Landshut. I have been racing for them for the past few years in the league. It can be a bit tricky. It is a special track.&nbsp;"It’s quite easy to ride but it’s hard to be quick there. You need to know some spots on the track where you need to be. Hopefully I have a small advantage.”With Germany’s Bundesliga lacking teams for 2024, Huckenbeck races in Poland and Sweden. He admits the nation’s top riders are forced to compete in foreign leagues to develop their careers.There’s no doubt a big performance from Huckenbeck on the Speedway GP stage this season could help the sport’s resurgence in his homeland.He said: “I hope speedway is going to come back in Germany. We only have two teams in our league. Since corona, it went downhill with meetings. I hope it’s going to rise again, and we have some young guys coming up. It’s tough to get into the foreign leagues as a German. When nobody knows you, it’s hard to get in there.&nbsp;“We have our wild card Norick Blodorn. He’s doing quite well. He is still young and he has a lot to learn. But I think he is going in a good way.”

Polish icon Bartosz Zmarzlik stormed to a 15-point maximum as Lejonen thumped Vargarna 68-22 in Sweden’s Bauhaus Elitserien on Tuesday.Zmarzlik dominated in Gislaved and had plenty of support from the Lions team as former world No.2 Jaroslaw Hampel also went unbeaten on 13 paid 15. Their compatriot Kacper Woryna bagged a 12-point maximum from four rides, with local hero Oliver Berntzon undefeated on 10 paid 12 from four. Polish star Szymon Wozniak admits he fulfilled a promise to his father as he made his Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw debut, storming into the semi-finals last Saturday.Wozniak collected a career-best 10 championship points at PGE Narodowy in front of his father Edwin, who was enjoying Speedway GP in Poland’s capital for the very first time.Wozniak senior pledged that he would only go to the Orlen FIM Warsaw Speedway GP if his son was in action and made the trip after Szymon finished third in the 2023 FIM SGP Challenge to become an SGP regular for 2024.The Polish international was delighted to give Edwin a night to remember. Taking up the story, he revealed: “When the first GP round took place in Warsaw in 2015, I told my father, ‘Come on, let’s see speedway at the national stadium.’ He said, ‘I don’t want to go. I will watch it on TV.&nbsp;“My father has a problem with his eyes. He’s getting more and more blind. But he told me, ‘When you qualify for the GP one year and you are racing in Warsaw, then I will go to the stadium and watch that.’ Maybe I did that too late because he doesn’t see much at the moment.“He was there, though, and that’s such a nice feeling. I promised him I would make it one year. Maybe it just took me a little too long, but it’s such a nice feeling that I did it by myself. I qualified for the GP and raced in Warsaw.&nbsp;"He was there, watched the meeting and now I can feel good that I did what I promised.”Wozniak was elated to reach the last eight of a Speedway GP event for the first time in his career and feels things could have been even better.He said: “That was such a nice feeling to get to the semi, and especially in Warsaw. I had the potential to make it even better because my starts were quite good. That’s pretty important on a track like Warsaw.“It was down to knowledge and experience to choose the right lines and follow the adjustments to the bike to keep the speed at the right time.“It could have been better, but I enjoyed that night so much. I think I developed some fans. Everybody around me is happy. I am happy as well, but there is the potential to make it even better.”Wozniak bids to build on his Warsaw heroics in the Trans MF FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut this Saturday.

WARSAW JOY FOR WOZNIAK'S FATHER EDWIN

World No.6 Robert Lambert set his sights on a second national title as all three of Britain’s Speedway GP riders line-up at the Attis Insurance Sports Division British Championship Final in Manchester on Saturday, June 8.Lambert has not appeared in the British Final since he topped the podium in 2018, with Woffinden competing for the first time since winning his third title in 2015. Bewley is seeking his third straight British Championship on his Rowe Motor Oil Premiership home track, having claimed the crown in 2022 and 2023.The event looks set to offer the SGP Brits a competitive warm-up for GB’s FIM Speedway of Nations Final showdown there on Saturday, July 13, when they face the winners of the two Semi-Finals, which take place in Manchester on July 9 and 10.The stakes are also high for the trio’s British title rivals as the highest-placed non-SGP rider will earn the wild card for the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff at Principality Stadium on August 17.Lambert can’t wait for what’s set to be the most competitive British Championship Final in recent memory. He said: “All the GP boys are in, and all the top Brits are going to be heading straight to Manchester on Saturday, June 8 to battle it out. I am looking forward to it and it’s good to get some practice for the SON.“I am looking forward to being back in it. I will try and push for that second win. It would be pretty cool to have three Speedway GP boys on the British Final podium, but any of the guys can have their day and could be fast.&nbsp;“Manchester is one of those places where anyone can be quick. We have seen it in past meetings, and I definitely need to have my thinking cap on for that one.”The remaining 13 entrants will be confirmed in the coming days and Premiership CEO Phil Morris is pleased to have the nation’s Speedway GP stars in one of Britain’s biggest domestic events.He said: “We’re delighted to have the three GP boys involved, and this along with the Saturday date is another step towards bringing this meeting back to the level which many of us will remember.“With another five previous winners expected to be in the line-up, this is going to be the strongest British Final in at least a decade.“There will be lots to go for including the wild card for Cardiff, and it’s only a month or so before the FIM Speedway of Nations which also takes place at Belle Vue, so it’s also a chance for riders to lay down a marker there.“I’d like to place on record our thanks to Eurosport and Warner Bros. Discovery for their willingness to accommodate us in their schedule on the Saturday evening, and I really feel this is an event that everyone will be delighted to get behind.”
