Great Britain icon Tai Woffinden admits being a triple Speedway GP world champion means he only has one goal on the sport’s biggest stage as he goes for gold in 2024.

Speaking in the first episode of Monster Energy’s Twist the Throttle series, which premieres on the Speedway GP YouTube channel tonight from 19:00 CET, Woffinden insists he has no intention of lowering his expectations after winning the sport’s biggest prize in 2013, 2015 and 2018.

He said: “My goal is the same every season. After winning three world titles, you can’t then say, ‘This year, I want to finish third.’ When I go out there on the track, I want to win every race. I think everybody is the same. That’s why we are the best riders in the world.”

Tonight’s episode also features the likes of world No.2 Fredrik Lindgren, 2017 Speedway GP world champion Jason Doyle, GB star Dan Bewley and Danish racer Leon Madsen.

Lindgren is also aiming high after racing to a career-best second place in the 2023 Speedway GP series. He said: “I want to be world champion. I am not looking to be better than the other riders; I am just trying to be the best version of myself that I can be and race as well as I can. Then we will see if that’s good enough to be No.1.”

Tonight’s episode rewinds to the start of the 2023 series, which got underway with the FIM Speedway GP of Croatia. The event was won by Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik, but Doyle came agonisingly close to his first SGP win since 2017 when he jetted from the tapes in the final, only to crash on turn one.

“I had the best gate and made a great start,” he said. “I closed the door too much on Bartek, it took off and that was pretty much me done and dusted. I had all my eggs in one basket. If I had made that corner, I would have been on the rostrum.”

Hear from the sport’s biggest stars in the first of five weekly episodes, with a special edition of Twist the Throttle set to be televised on Eurosport on April 16.
