ALLEN: WOFFY DELIVERED MORE THAN POINTS FOR GB
Joint Great Britain team manager Oliver Allen says Lions skipper Tai Woffinden “brought more to the team than the points” during the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup.Woffinden scored seven at the Final in Wroclaw on July 29, winning his opening two heats, before scoring one point from his final three rides. The Brits were forced to settle for silver as they fell just two points short of their first title over the four-team World Cup format since 1989, with Poland claiming a record ninth victory in the competition.Taking to social media after the Final, Woffinden expressed his frustration with his own performance. But Allen insists the triple Speedway GP world champion’s contribution to the side was huge.He said: “Tai probably didn’t score as many points as he would have wanted to. But if you look at what Tai brings to the team, he brought more points than the ones he scored. “It’s not common knowledge, but he bought an engine from Ash-Tech for Adam Ellis to use – specifically for the World Cup. Can you tell me another captain who has done that?! Things like that are invaluable, and also his experience and calmness around the team. Okay, he dropped more points than he would have wanted to, but he also brought more to the team than the points.”Lambert lined up against Poland’s Maciej Janowski in the all-important heat 20, with the Wroclaw hero slipping past him as he chased race leader Max Fricke going into the final lap to deny GB a run-off for first place and seal the Ove Fundin Trophy. But with the Norfolk ace scoring 25 points – the highest tally of all the Lions stars over their two Monster Energy FIM SWC meetings, Allen insists the world No.5 could have done no more.“Robert really beat himself up after that last race,” he said. “But he did a fantastic job overall. I have watched that last race back numerous times and I don’t know what Robert could have done differently. He was in the unfortunate position where he was quicker than Max at the front and Max was holding him up. But he knew if he tried to overtake him, he would be opening himself up to a move from Magic. It was a really hard task. How many hundreds of thousands of laps of that track has Magic done?“My memory of that final race is almost slow-motion. I remember thinking after two laps, ‘Who am I putting in the run-off against Bartosz Zmarzlik? What a race that’s going to be!’“I thought we were having a run-off and then Magic came from nowhere. I will never forget the Polish fans when Magic went up the inside of Robert. That will live with me for a long time.”The Lions have now finished in the world’s top two for three straight seasons – massive progress after struggling to reach the rostrum consistently for decades. They may have missed out on the gold medal they desired, but Allen believes the Brits have a lot to be positive about. He said: “If you look at the biggest picture of all, we are all involved in speedway because we love it and it was probably one of, if not the best, World Cup Finals there has ever been. You couldn’t ask for more. It went down to three teams going into the last race and it was a brilliant advert for speedway. From that point of view, great.“As far as where Great Britain has come from and where we are now, that’s also really positive. In the last three years, we have had a gold medal and two silvers. We have been the most consistent team over the last few years, so that’s a bonus as well.“The disappointing thing is to lose the way we did. I would say we led for longer than anyone else in that meeting. "It was heartbreaking to lose it, but I am really, really proud of every one of the five boys. As a team and a unit, I think we had the best team atmosphere we have ever had. I have no complaints.”
BELLEGO: FRENCH SPEEDWAY'S RACE OFF BOOST
French star David Bellego hopes to see more young riders emerge after his country claimed sixth place in the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup.The team qualified for the tournament for the first time in its history and reached the Race Off, beating Finland to third place in Semi-Final 2, with Dimitri Berge starring on 14 points. They finished third ahead of the Czech team in the Race Off, scoring 20 points. Berge led the way again on 10, with Bellego scoring seven and double World Long Track champion Mathieu Tresarrieu adding three. With France launching a speedway league in 2017, the nation is making strides in the sport and creating new opportunities for riders. While Bellego admits finding the numbers to put up a five-man side for the Monster Energy FIM SWC was no easy task, he hopes the French can build on their charge to the Race Off last weekend. He said: “For us it was tough to go there with a full five-rider squad, but I think everybody did a good job. I was disappointed not to give a bit more to the team, but that’s how it is sometimes.“Overall, I think we can be happy to have made the Race Off and finished third. Dimitri Berge gave us qualification for the Race Off for sure, so well done to him. He was good again on Friday.“It was a big boost to be in the Race Off and we will see what happens in a few years. Our league in France is still pretty small at the moment. But it is giving a chance for the younger kids to be part of the sport and part of the speedway world. “For sure it’s a big step from racing in France to being in the SWC, but we can see some new faces are there and it will hopefully bring through some more kids for the future.”
LAMBERT: BRITS WILL BOUNCE BACK STRONGER
Great Britain star Robert Lambert believes the Lions can come back stronger after suffering Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup heartbreak in Wroclaw on Saturday. The Brits went into a last-heat decider just a point behind Poland as they battled for their first world title over the four-team World Cup format since England won gold at Bradford in 1989.Going into lap three, Lambert was holding second place behind Aussie star Max Fricke in heat 20, with Polish racer Maciej Janowski placed last behind Denmark’s Anders Thomsen. This would have been enough for GB to grab gold, but Janowski gave Thomsen the slip at the end of the lap, before sending Wroclaw into a frenzy when he dived under Lambert at the start of lap four to snatch the title for Poland. It was a cruel way for Britain to miss out on what would have been their first world title on foreign shale since England’s 1984 FIM Speedway World Pairs win at Lonigo – 39 years ago.But Lambert is determined to bounce back as the Lions finished in the world’s top two for the third straight season. He said: “We knew watching the Race Off that it was going to be much closer in the Final and it would come down to the last four heats.“I knew I needed to win that last one. Everything was cool and I made a good start, but Max had to come and mess things up and get in front. I knew if I was in second and Magic was behind me, we would have a run-off.“I tried to finish it in that race and get the win. I moved off the line and Magic came up the inside. I was fast. I had speed in the bike. I did what I could, but it didn’t work.“I was just thinking of that last heat as another race because I could have ended up losing everything in my head and messing things up big time. I was making good starts all night. I was very confident in my equipment. “I know it’s the best GB has done in the World Cup, but we had belief we could come here, get a medal and push forwards to win it. We knew that and we believed that. "It’s hard to take at the moment, but we move forwards and sometimes you need those knockbacks to come back stronger again.”
SURGERY FOR HOLDER IN LUBLIN
Aussie star Jack Holder is set for surgery on Tuesday after crashing out of the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup Final in Wroclaw on Saturday.Holder tumbled in the hard-fought opening exchanges of heat 15 and was thrown over the high side of the bike.An awkward fall forced him to withdraw from the remainder of the meeting and his PGE Ekstraliga club Lublin confirmed he sustained a hand injury. He is now set to undergo surgery in Lublin on Tuesday with the club pledging to ensure he has the best care needed to make a speedy recovery.A statement on the club’s official website confirmed: “Due to Saturday's fall of Jack Holder in the 15th race during the Team World Cup in Wrocław, we would like to inform you that our competitor went straight to Lublin after the competition, where he underwent a number of medical examinations at the Dożynkowa Medisport Medical Center.“Ultimately, it turned out that Jack had injured his hand and will undergo surgery tomorrow by Dr Paweł Polak - a specialist in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, who performed Dominik Kubera's surgery two months ago.“Since Saturday's fall, Jack has been surrounded by the best medical care and we make every effort to ensure that our rider reaches full health as soon as possible. We're with you, Jack!”Losing Holder for the final four heats was a huge blow to his country as well as the rider, with the Roos just five points behind leaders Great Britain and Poland, with all four countries in the race for gold in an epic Final.Holder’s layoff time is unclear at this stage, but everyone involved in Speedway GP wishes the rider a fast and full recovery.
