THORSSELL MAKES VASTERVIK MOVE
Double Swedish champion Jacob Thorssell hopes a change of scenery will lift his scoring in 2023 after signing for Bauhaus Elitserien side Vastervik. Thorssell makes the move to the coastal club from their near neighbours Dackarna, where he has raced since 2019. He joins forces with former Wolverhampton team mate Tai Woffinden, as well as former World Under-21 champion Bartosz Smektala and local young gun Anton Karlsson. Thorssell hopes the move will help him find his finest form next season. He told the Vastervik website: “After a few years in Dackarna, it felt right for me to make a change of environment and Västervik was the perfect fit for me. “After a tough year, I’m very eager to bounce back with a good year. There are a lot of new things for me next year with a new club in both Poland and Sweden and also a new mechanic. The team looks very good on paper so I think we will go far.” Vastervik boss Morgan Andersson believes the club can help Thorssell bring out his best form. He said: “It obviously feels very good to have Jacob next season. “During the year, he has mixed things up a bit in terms of results and, with that, he got a favourable average that I am convinced he can raise considerably in the next season. “I know that Jacob is already working hard with his preparations for the upcoming season and I am sure that we will see a determined Thorssell. Jacob’s ability is very high, and I hope and believe that we can get it out of him in 2023.” Elsewhere, Joel Andersson has extended his contract with champions Smederna, where he joins forces with Speedway GP star Robert Lambert, Kacper Woryna, Pontus Aspgren, Michael Jepsen Jensen and Philip Hellstrom-Bangs. And Swedish youngster Theo Bergqvist joins this year’s runners-up Lejonen, where he will mainly serve in their Allsvenskan and Division One teams.

TEURNBERG BACKS 'BADASS' LEBEDEVS TO STAR FOR DACKARNA
Dackarna boss Mikael Teurnberg is backing “badass” Latvian star Andzejs Lebedevs to impress in Malilla after drafting him in for 2023. The Latvian racer spent the past season with the Malilla club’s Bauhaus Elitserien rivals Rospiggarna, but makes the move to the Skrotfrag Arena, where he joins Danish star Rasmus Jensen, Filip Hjelmland and Ludvig Lindgren so far. Lebedevs reached the semi-final of the For Nature Solutions FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on October 1 and, after being named as the series’ third substitute rider for this year, he has been upgraded to first reserve for 2023. The 2017 Speedway European Championship winner is being tipped to thrive in Malilla by Dackarna boss Mikael Teurnberg. He told the club’s website: “This is a guy who rides quite hard, who has a bit of a badass in him. “Before the 2014 season, I took him to Rospiggarna. After that, he has raced several seasons in Rospiggarna and in Smederna. Especially in Smederna, he was very consistent for a few seasons and helped win league-title gold. “It’s great that he will race for Dackarna. It feels good to get him into the team.” Elsewhere, champions Smederna have extended Polish international Kacper Woryna’s deal for next season. After helping the Eskilstuna outfit to Bauhaus Elitserien gold alongside Speedway GP duo Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley this year, Woryna can’t wait to be part of Smederna’s title defence. He said: “I am really happy to stay in Eskilstuna Smederna. Since I came to the club in 2021, the only goal has been to win gold and as a rider, gold is the only thing I want. “I am overjoyed with the silver medal in 2021 and gold in 2022, but it does not change our attitude and hunger to take another gold. We are starting from scratch next season, and I am happy to be part of the team on another journey.”
BECKER NAMED IN WOLVES SIDE FOR 2023
Wolves boss Peter Adams is backing American international Luke Becker to continue his progress at Monmore Green after he was unveiled as the club’s first 2023 signing. Becker bagged the club’s Rider of the Year prize at their end-of-season awards on Sunday night. He played a key role in the club’s charge to the SGB Premiership play-off semi-finals, as well as scoring 19 points for the USA in FIM Speedway of Nations Semi-Final 1 at Vojens in July. His form has earned Becker a place on the Speedway GP substitutes list for 2023, and Adams is confident there is more to come from the Californian. He said: “Before he headed back home to America, Luke sat down with Chris (Van Straaten – promoter) and we’re delighted to announce that he agreed terms and he will be in the team again next year. “Luke enjoys riding for Wolverhampton, we enjoy having him here. He continues to develop at this level and it will be another big year for him I’m sure.” Photo: Taylor Lanning
MILIK SEALS SWEDISH PIRATES STAY
Czech charger Vaclav Milik is on his way back to Swedish side Piraterna for 2023. The FIM Speedway of Nations star has extended his contract with the Motala club for another year and returns to them on a 1.825 average, joining Polish star Oskar Fajfer and Swedish racer Mathias Thornblom in the squad. Milik was part of the Czech side that raced to its best-ever FIM SON performance in Vojens last July, which saw them take a shock fifth place ahead of highly-fancied Poland in the Final. Pirates boss Daniel Davidsson believes the hard-charging Pardubice racer’s versatility will be important to the club in 2023. After announcing the deal, he said: “That is another important piece of the puzzle in place. After a somewhat tentative start to 2022, Václav showed good riding on all types of tracks. He will be important for us in 2023.”
