Australian icon Jason Doyle says he never doubted his ability to get back on top of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix podium after ending his six-and-a-half-year victory quest at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw on Saturday.Doyle last stood atop the Speedway GP rostrum on October 28, 2017 – <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpBbGFZVmEw&amp;t=2s">the night he famously won the FIM Speedway GP of Australia – Melbourne</a> to become the first Aussie world champion crowned Down Under.But he ended his victory quest in front of almost 50,000 fans by holding off a relentless pursuit from reigning Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik to top the rostrum ahead of the second-placed Pole, with Great Britain’s Robert Lambert third and Slovakia’s Martin Vaculik in fourth spot.Despite years of ups and downs on the SGP stage, Doyle was delighted to get another chance to enjoy the Aussie national anthem – following up his second place to compatriot Jack Holder, who sang Advance Australia Fair in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AWeASK5hYA">Croatia on April 27</a>.&nbsp;Doyle joked: “I need to learn the Australian national anthem again. We’ve kept the team pretty close.“To finally stand on top of the podium after so long means so much to us. He said, ‘I don’t want to go. I will watch it on TV.’&nbsp;“My father has a problem with his eyes. He’s getting more and more blind. But he told me, ‘When you qualify for the GP one year and you are racing in Warsaw, then I will go to the stadium and watch that.’ Maybe I did that too late because he doesn’t see much at the moment.“He was here, though, and that’s such a nice feeling. I promised him I would make it one year. Maybe it just took me a little too long, but it’s such a nice feeling that I qualified for the GP myself and raced in Warsaw. He was here, watched the meeting and now I can feel good that I did what I promised.“It was such a nice feeling to get to the semi, and especially in Warsaw. I had the potential to make it even better because my starts were quite good. That’s pretty important on a track like Warsaw.“I enjoyed that night so much. Everybody around me is happy. SPEEDWAY GP JOINS FORCES WITH 'FURIOSA:  A MAD MAX SAGA' FOR WARSAW AND LANDSHUT EVENTS

Great Britain racer Dan Bewley was elated to add four points to his Speedway GP World Championship total after making history as the first-ever SGP sprint race winner in Warsaw on Friday.Bewley rounded Danish star Leon Madsen in a dramatic battle to start his Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw weekend at PGE Narodowy in fine style as they prepare to compete in front of a 50,000-plus crowd in Saturday’s SGP showdown.Madsen took second place and three championship points, with Britain’s triple Speedway GP world champion Tai Woffinden earning two for third place and GB star Robert Lambert completing a hat-trick of Lions heroes in the sprint race, scoring one point for fourth place.Victory saw Bewley leap from 14th place in the Speedway GP standings to 11th as he bounced back from a tough night at the opening round in Croatia, and the Cumbrian star was pleasantly surprised with his four-some Friday bonus.“It’s always nice to win and I actually thought I was getting two points,” he said. “Four points is good for me. The first round wasn’t brilliant, so it’s nice. But the real show starts tomorrow.“I have a decent history on the temporary tracks. Just for us to walk into a stadium this big here in Warsaw, and Cardiff is similar … It doesn’t happen every week. It’s cool and it feels a little bit special compared to the other rounds. It’s cool. The few points you race for can matter at the end of the season. I’m happy with those three points and I did it for my two girls.“I feel pretty good this year. I started out well and I have continued from last season. Tomorrow is a new day, and anything can happen.”&nbsp;<img src="https://eventrack-1.ams3.digitaloceanspaces.com/staging/378789/conversions/Woffinden1892-large.jpg"/>Third-placed Woffinden was pleased to pocket two championship points and was pleased with the addition of the sprint race, which will also feature in FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff Qualifying Practice session at Principality Stadium on Friday, August 16, &nbsp;The 16 riders were allocated into four groups of four for the brand-new Qualifying Practice format, with the fastest rider from each group taking their place in the sprint race. The move is aimed to ensure the four riders in each group compete in similar track conditions, ensuring no group is advantaged or disadvantaged as the racing surface evolves over the session.But Woffinden would prefer to see the fastest four riders out of all 16 line up in the four-lap showdown and earn first pick of starting positions, instead of the fastest rider in each group, which are selected at random by an FIM draw.&nbsp;He said: “I like the format. I think it’s cool. It’s something new for the fans and something interesting for them to tune into on Friday.“The one thing I don’t like is it’s a random draw for who you race in the groups. You could get a super-stacked four, or you could essentially qualify out of your group, but be sixth or seventh in the overall timing charts and be in the sprint race because your group is weaker.“I feel like they should still stick with the original timing sheets because that’s authentic. Because we have drawn the groups out of a hat, some might be stacked, and others might have three really slow riders against you. You might be slow as well, but you could still qualify.“I think the rest of the format is good. The point-scoring is good. I just think the groups bit should be looked at.”&nbsp;<img src="https://eventrack-1.ams3.digitaloceanspaces.com/staging/378786/conversions/Lambert2700-large.jpg"/>Fourth-placed Lambert finished second in the timing charts, only to finish fourth in the sprint race, meaning he had fourth choice of starting positions for Saturday’s Speedway GP.While he was a little frustrated to see second choice slip away, he was pleased to add a point to his championship total at the start of a fine 2024 season so far.He said: “I was able to get a good time and finish second overall. I thought I was still going to be second, but then I came last in the sprint race, and I got fourth pick.“The whole concept of adding something new for the fans is great and it adds that extra pressure to Qualifying Practice. It keeps your mind more on the game.“I’m looking forward to a full stadium and hearing that roar of the crowd – even above my bike. Speedway GP World Championship leader Jack Holder insists it’s “back to business” after his first-ever Speedway GP win in Croatia, but the Aussie admits he was keen to enjoy the moment.Holder goes into the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw this Saturday leading the standings after topping the Boll FIM Speedway GP of Croatia podium on April 27.It was an historic night for one of the sport’s most famous families as Holder followed his 2012 Speedway GP world title-winning brother Chris into the SGP winners’ club – making them the first sibling pair to both win a round.Alongside his Speedway GP commitments, Holder races for Lublin in Poland and British side Sheffield, so there was never going to be much time in his busy schedule to drink in a famous win.But riders only claim their first SGP victory once and Holder was keen to enjoy it, even if his attention must now turn to Saturday’s showdown in Warsaw.He said: “The win was amazing, but that was two weeks ago. As hard as it is to put it to the back of your mind and just focus on the next GP and the next couple of races, that’s what you have to do.&nbsp;“But I know how it works and I know how quickly it can change. You have to embrace these moments because they don’t come that often. With the history that has been made, you have to celebrate it a little bit.“I was lucky enough to have pretty much the whole week off until last Thursday at Sheffield. I was still pinching myself until that day. I was more nervous about going to Sheffield and racing again, thinking, ‘How am I going to go?’“I ticked off a big box, winning a Speedway GP, but I just got back into the swing of things straight away. You can’t get ahead of yourself. Dad would be over here kicking my backside if I was carrying on like an idiot! I had to enjoy it a little bit, but now we’re back to business.”Holder’s Croatia victory was the culmination of an impressive transformation, which began when he was handed the first reserve berth for the 2022 Speedway GP series, before being promoted into the full line-up following the suspension of Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.The Sheffield star admits he put himself under pressure to prove himself after his late promotion two years ago. But he believes qualifying for the 2023 Speedway GP series at the FIM SGP Challenge in Glasgow in August 2022 truly made him feel he belonged on the sport’s biggest stage.He said: “Sometimes it’s better to get in on your own merit. I was lucky enough that I was first reserve in 2022 and I got my go. I put everything into that year – maybe a little too much because I knew I had to prove myself. That was a lot of pressure.“But then later that year, I qualified for 2023 at the FIM SGP Challenge. That was a massive relief. I knew I had done it myself and I didn’t have anyone saying, ‘He shouldn’t be in it.’“When that box was ticked off and I was safe for the following year, I thought ‘Beautiful! Now I can enjoy it a bit.’ I also reached the semi-finals for the first time in Cardiff a week before that SGP Challenge, and then I started enjoying Speedway GP life after that.”

LEADER HOLDER: BACK TO BUSINESS IN WARSAW

Great Britain racer Robert Lambert warmed up for Warsaw by bagging 14 points as Vastervik opened Sweden’s Bauhaus Elitserien season with a 47-43 win away to Vargarna on Tuesday.Lambert heads into Saturday’s Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw in red-hot form after dropping just one point away to the league’s newly-promoted club in Norrkoping.He was supported by a nine paid 12-point tally from Aussie ace Max Fricke, with Denmark’s Mads Hansen and former Swedish champion Jacob Thorssell contributing seven paid 10 each.Former world No.3 Niels-Kristian Iversen notched 15 points for the home side, with Daniel Henderson adding nine paid 10.Elsewhere, German star Kai Huckenbeck blazed to 15 points from six races for Rospiggarna, but it was not enough to save them from a 54-36 loss at home to a Polish-powered Lejonen side.Four-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik also heads into Poland’s biggest speedway event in great form after scoring 13 for the Lions, with Warsaw wild card Mateusz Cierniak bagging 10 paid 11. Kacper Woryna and Casper Henriksson collected eight paid nine each, while Dominik Kubera scored seven. Polish young gun Wiktor Przyjemski raced to 11 paid 14 for Rospiggarna.Latvian star Andzejs Lebedevs topped the Dackarna score chart on 11 points as they won 55-35 at home to Piraterna.He was backed up by a 10 paid 12-point total from Aussie star Brady Kurtz, with Swedish international Timo Lahti tallying 10. ELITSERIEN | LAMBERT STARS AS VASTERVIK WINS AWAY TO NEWLY-PROMOTED WOLVES

German racer Kai Huckenbeck admits he was “a bit surprised” to storm into his first FIM Speedway Grand Prix semi-final in Croatia as he bids to repeat the feat on his Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw debut on Saturday.Huckenbeck was handed his full-time Speedway GP bow for 2024 after receiving a permanent wild card from the SGP Commission, and he started the year in fine style.He took his place in the Boll FIM Speedway GP of Croatia semi-finals with 10 race points on April 27 and was even in contention for a final berth, only for Australia’s Jason Doyle to pass him for second spot on the opening lap.But 11 championship points was a superb start to the season for Germany’s first full-time Speedway GP rider since Martin Smolinski raced in the 2014 series.Huckenbeck admits he has never worked harder or felt better going into a season and was pleased to see his efforts rewarded. He said: “It has been a tough winter, but the hard work paid off. I felt very comfortable and confident in Croatia. I hope it continues like that.“I was a bit surprised. If someone had said I would score 10 points in my first five heats, I would have signed up for that!“I made a small mistake coming out of turn two in the semi-final. I lifted too much down the back straight. I opened the door for Jason, and he took the chance. But I am happy about the result. It’s alright. I was very satisfied in Croatia. My goal was to reach the semis. It would have been nice to get into the final, but a small mistake cost me that spot.”After going 10 years without a Speedway GP regular to support, German fans were elated with Huckenbeck’s opening-round display. He said: “I got so much positive feedback after the meeting in Croatia. I got so many messages. Everyone was cheering and happy for me. It was a great feeling.”Now the Bydgoszcz and Rospiggarna rider cannot wait to compete in the Orlen FIM Warsaw Speedway GP in front of over 50,000 fans at PGE Narodowy this Saturday.
