Former world No.3 Maciej Janowski stormed into the Speedway European Championship line-up for 2024 after winning the SEC Challenge at Latvian track Daugavpils on Sunday.

Janowski scored 12 points from five rides, and the four-time FIM Speedway World Cup winner will be a stellar addition to the SEC series, which sees the European champion win a guaranteed place in Speedway GP for 2025.

His compatriot Piotr Pawlicki is also in the hunt for an SGP comeback after taking second place to qualify on 11 – a score matched by third-placed Czech charger Vaclav Milik.

The trio are joined in qualifying by Poland’s Kacper Woryna and Latvia’s Jevgenijs Kostigovs, who saw off Swedish international Timo Lahti and Polish young gun Bartlomiej Kowalski in a run-off for the final qualification places.

Speedway GP riders Przemyslaw Pawlicki and Anders Thomsen fell short on eight and seven points respectively, with France’s Dimitri Berge, Denmark’s Rasmus Jensen and Poland’s double SGP2 champion Mateusz Cierniak also missing out on seven.

The SEC Challenge qualifiers join the 2023 SEC top five, champion Mikkel Michelsen, Leon Madsen, Janusz Kolodziej, Patryk Dudek and Andzejs Lebedevs in the series. The line-up will be completed by five wild cards selected by FIM Europe and SEC promoter One Sport.
