SCHOOL'S OUT FOR ANDERSENSCHOOL'S OUT FOR ANDERSEN

Danish SGP2 star Mikkel Andersen admitted “I think about speedway around the clock” after leaving school to focus on his racing.

Andersen is back with Vojens team Sønderjylland Elite Speedway and has established himself as one of Denmark’s hottest racing prospects.

He won the 2022 FIM SGP3 Final for under-16 250cc riders in Wroclaw and made the next step up the FIM Speedway pyramid this summer, lining up in SGP2 – the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship. The 16-year-old raced to a very impressive fourth place in his championship debut season, finishing just four points short of the podium.

He admits leaving school this summer has given him more time to focus on his burgeoning career. He told the Vojens official website: “It's great to have more energy and less stress in everyday life. I spend time on physical training, but I'm also at our workshop a lot.”

Andersen works closely with his father Brian Andersen – winner of the 1997 FIM British Speedway GP in Bradford and a skilled engineer. Brian has played a big role in Mikkel’s rapid progress and, while some family teams can struggle to work together in the pits, that’s clearly not the case in the Andersen camp.

Mikkel added: “My father and I get along really well, and we try in every way to anticipate any technical errors. If I have to be completely honest, my life right now is only speedway, and I think about speedway around the clock.”

Andersen admits he was pleasantly surprised with his 2024 progress. He said: “I am surprised at how well it has all gone. It was a season without individual championships, but it has been, in several cases, small margins, or thanks to my own mistakes that I missed out. But looking at my development process, I am very satisfied.”

He's pleased to be lining up for SES in Denmark’s top two leagues once again, joining forces with SGP duo Anders Thomsen and Andzejs Lebedevs, plus Danish racer Mads Hansen.

“Vojens is the best place for me,” Andersen said. “I only experience nice people in the club and among the many volunteers.”

Vojens hosts three huge FIM Speedway events in 2025 as the SGP season concludes with the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on Saturday, September 13. The SGP2 champion will also be crowned at the legendary venue on Friday, September 12, with SGP4 for the sport’s 190cc riders aged 11-13 taking place at Vojens for the very first time on September 13.
