Great Britain racer Robert Lambert believes a motocross trip to Spain has been the perfect way to prepare for his FIM Speedway Grand Prix title quest.

The world No.2 has just returned from northern Spain, where he got back on two wheels ahead of his return to a speedway bike in the coming weeks.

Lambert lines up in Danish icon Niels Kristian Iversen’s British testimonial at King’s Lynn on Sunday, March 16, before heading to Manchester's National Speedway Stadium to take part in the Peter Craven Memorial meeting on March 17.

But before he got sideways, Lambert opted to warm up for the season with some motocross action.

He said: “We have spent the last few weeks in Spain, training on the motocross bike near Barcelona. It was a good way to kick things off before we now jump on the speedway bike.

“It’s the third time I have gone down to Spain for motocross. It’s just to get race-fit really and get my arms back in the game. Being on a motorbike is something all speedway riders love.

“It’s just about getting bike time and doing something apart from speedway, which is also enjoyable. The tracks are good down there and there are many different tracks to go to. The weather is obviously a bit better than it is in Northern Europe at this time of year.

“It’s nice to get a bit of sun on your back, get away from home for a little while, do some training and enjoy some motocross.”

Some critics hit out at the risks of riders potentially take in integrating motocross into their training regimes. But Lambert insists that done sensibly, the sport offers the ideal way for riders to regain race fitness.

“It depends what kind of character you are,” he said. “If you are one who doesn’t think too much, goes crazy on the motocross bike, does lots of jumps or tracks that are above your capability, you may risk getting injured.

“If you go steady, just enjoy it and use it for training purposes, you will get a lot out of it and a lot of gains from being on a bike. You just have to use your head.

“It’s the same as jumping back on a speedway bike. If you don’t work yourself back into that, you can get injured as soon as you get back on the bike.”
