FAMOUS FIVE FOR POLISH ICON ZMARZLIK
14/09/2024
Polish hero Bartosz Zmarzlik cemented his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats after sealing his fifth FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship at the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on Saturday.
Zmarzlik secured a record-equalling third gold medal in as many years by taking second place on a night Great Britain hero Robert Lambert claimed his first-ever Speedway GP win, with Poland’s Maciej Janowski third and Latvia’s Andzejs Lebedevs fourth in his first-ever SGP final.
Zmarzlik becomes only the third rider in history to win three FIM Speedway world titles in a row – matching New Zealand legend Ivan Mauger’s hat-trick of World Final wins between 1968 and 1970.
He is now just one Speedway GP World Championship away from equalling Mauger and Swedish icon Tony Rickardsson’s all-time record haul of six world titles.
Lambert leapfrogged Swedish star Fredrik Lindgren for second place in the Speedway GP World Championship standings. This sets up a tense silver-medal showdown at the series-closing DeWalt FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on Saturday, September 28, with Lambert on 137 points and Lindgren on 127.
Full report and reaction from Vojens to follow later.
