Former world No.2 Patryk Dudek got the better of Poland’s FIM Speedway of Nations starters as he won the opening round of the Polish Championship in Lodz on Saturday.

Reigning national champion Bartosz Zmarzlik topped the heat score chart on 13 points as he prepares for Poland’s SON Semi-Final 1 showdown in Manchester on Tuesday, which sees them take on Sweden, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and Ukraine.

Dudek finished on 12 to join the four-time Speedway GP world champion in qualifying automatically for the final.

But Dudek got the verdict when it mattered most in the final, finishing ahead of Zmarzlik, as well as bagging an extra championship point for notching the most heat wins to end the day on 16 – one ahead of Zmarzlik on 15.

Last year’s SGP2 bronze medallist Bartlomiej Kowalski was third in the final to collect 10 championship points in total. His Wroclaw teammate Maciej Janowski took fourth place and also left Lodz with 10.

Kowalski won the semi-final ahead of Janowski, former Speedway GP star Przemyslaw Pawlicki and Polish SON pick Dominik Kubera.

Janowski and Pawlicki all scored 10 in the heats, with Kubera and Kowalski pipping Piotr Pawlicki and Speedway GP rider Szymon Wozniak into the semi on countback after all four tied on nine.

Zmarzlik will now captain his country into the SON at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium and he is joined by Kubera in Poland’s starting pair, with Janowski named in the No.3 reserve role.
