Speedway GP star Dan Bewley withdrew from Belle Vue’s home victory over Oxford on Monday night due to concerns over a back injury.

Bewley won his opening race but took no further part in Aces’ Rowe Motor Oil Premiership 53-37 victory over the Spires, which saw former World Under-21 champion Jaimon Lidsey rack up 16 points, while SGP newcomer Brady Kurtz bagged 14 paid 15.

Belle Vue boss Mark Lemon hailed his side’s “grit and determination” after a series of setbacks, which also saw German star Norick Blodorn battle through an injury to score eight points.

He said: “It was a bit of a worry in the morning. I had a couple of phone calls that made me pull my hair out.

“Jaimon had an issue with traffic in Poland, he and his family were coming over and they missed their flight. Then Norick was struggling with injury. He was not too keen on racing, so he did an amazing job to perform like he did.

"To then lose Dan after one race after jarring his back. He was in considerable pain. I was wondering what next. But these boys rallied. The resolve they showed with grit and determination was outstanding.”

Elsewhere in the Premiership, a huge 16 paid 18 points from former Speedway GP star Chris Harris inspired King’s Lynn to a hard-fought 46-44 win at home to Leicester.

But it was not all good news for the Stars after Aussie racer Ben Cook withdrew with a wrist injury. It is unclear how long he will be sidelined.
