Californian racer Luke Becker has booked his place in next year’s FIM Speedway Grand Prix qualification rounds after retaining his AMA FIM North America Championship crown at Kern County Raceway last Saturday.

Becker cruised to glory with a 15-point maximum for a second straight season, and the 2024 Speedway GP fifth reserve now has the opportunity to fight for a place at the FIM GP Challenge in Pardubice on October 4, where the top three riders are guaranteed full-time spots in the 2025 Speedway GP series.

Having finished eighth at this year’s FIM GP Challenge on nine points – just a point behind Czech racer Jan Kvech, who secured qualification for the 2024 Speedway GP series, Becker is edging ever closer to becoming the USA’s first full-time SGP rider since Greg Hancock raced his last round in 2018.

He has already made his debut on the World Championship stage, scoring two points after receiving a late call-up for the season-ending DeWalt FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun on September 30. And that taste of the action will have whetted Becker’s appetite for more appearances in the big time.

The USA’s second spot in the Speedway GP qualifiers will be offered to Billy Janniro, who finished second on 12 points after beating Broc Nicol in a run-off for the silver medal.

But third-placed Nicol may yet fly the Stars and Stripes in the SGP qualifiers, should Janniro pass up the opportunity to head to Europe for the international rounds.

Brothers Dillon and Max Ruml were fourth and fifth respectively on 11 and 10 points at Kern County, with Austin Novratil scoring 10 in sixth,
