Danish racer Mikkel Michelsen stormed to victory in a dramatic last-heat decider to earn 2021 PGE Ekstraliga finalists Lublin an epic 46-44 win away to Gorzow on Friday.
In the teams’ Polish league opener for 2022, Lublin raced into a 43-41 lead going into heat 15. But their hopes of clinging on to it appeared to be fading when former world No.2 Jaroslaw Hampel was disqualified for moving at the start.
But Michelsen held his nerve against the might of Gorzow’s double world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik and Martin Vaculik, powering past them on lap one for the lead before defying a Zmarzlik onslaught to take the chequered flag for a priceless 3-3.
Michelsen ended an impressive night’s work on 14 points. Dominik Kubera collected eight paid nine and Maksym Drabik scored seven paid eight.
Zmarzlik racked up nine paid 10 points on a night when he didn’t have everything his own way, while Vaculik bagged a straight nine. Their Speedway GP rival Anders Thomsen also accrued eight for Gorzow.
Elsewhere, Aussie ace Jason Doyle raced to 11 points as Leszno won 46-44 away to Czestochowa in their first PGE Ekstraliga match of 2022.
Doyle collected two wins, two seconds and a third place from five rides as he spearheaded a strong, all-round team performance from the Bulls.
Former Speedway GP rider Janusz Kolodziej weighed in with 10 paid 11, while Piotr Pawlicki picked up eight.
French international David Bellego made a solid PGE Ekstraliga debut on seven paid nine, while Hubert Jablonski impressed at No.6 on six paid seven.
Danish racer Leon Madsen was by far Czestochowa’s top performer on 15 points, with Kacper Woryna tallying 10. Speedway GP star Fredrik Lindgren scored six.
