Czech star Jan Kvech would love to write his name in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix history books as Czechia’s first Speedway GP winner.Only two Czech riders have reached the SGP podium – Lukas Dryml achieved four across the 2002 and 2003 seasons, two seconds and two thirds, before Vaclav Milik finished third at the 2017 FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague.After being handed a permanent SGP wild card for 2025, Kvech has his sights set on joining this elite club. But the 2022 SGP2 and SON2 silver medallist would love to become his country’s first Speedway GP winner as he prepares for the season-opening WWK FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on Saturday evening.“That’s a challenge for me,” he said. “I want to win a GP. We have never had a Czech winner, and I want to do it.“Always when I go into a race, I want to win it. Nobody wants to lose. I am looking forward to the season. I can’t wait for the first GP. I want to be better than last season. I want to make a final. The first step is at least making it into the last-chance qualifier or the final. Then I can try and win the GP. I will do everything I can to be better than last year. This season I want to be more consistent. I hope this season I will make a final and get some good results.”Kvech finished 15th in the 2024 Speedway GP World Championship and admits he didn’t expect an SGP recall. But it’s an opportunity he’s determined to capitalise on as he builds his experience at the highest level.“I was very surprised,” he said. “I didn’t believe I would get the wild card, so I am very happy about that. I am happy to be back in the GP. The first season is always hard because it was my first time in both the GP and the Ekstraliga in Poland. I gained a lot of experience last season and now I want to be better.”

KVECH SEEKS SPEEDWAY GP HISTORY

Aussie racer Brady Kurtz racked up a sensational 16 points against PGE Ekstraliga champions Lublin, but it was not enough to save them from a 47-43 home loss as Jakub Krawczyk crashed out on Sunday evening.Kurtz dropped just two points from six races in a sublime showing at the Olympic Stadium. EKSTRALIGA | KURTZ HEROICS NOT ENOUGH TO SAVE WROCLAW FROM DEFEAT

Danish star Mikkel Michelsen opened up on his battle to get back on track for the 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix series as he insisted “I have the strength and mobility I need. I feel good on the bike.”The triple Speedway European Championship winner suffered multiple fractures when he crashed following a tough first turn with Bartosz Zmarzlik at last year’s OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga on September 7.He returns to World-Championship action for the WWK FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut next Saturday, bidding to repeat the famous victory he achieved there in 2024 – his first-ever SGP win.Michelsen has made a strong racing comeback, averaging 2.400 points per heat in his opening two PGE Ekstraliga matches for Torun ahead of their trip to Rybnik this Tuesday.That’s some feat considering the injuries he had to overcome during the off-season. “I dislocated my shoulder and there was some damage to the shoulder socket too,” he said. “I broke my upper arm; I fractured my elbow, and I fractured my heel as well. The extent of the injuries was a lot. It was all on my right side, which is my dominant side. It made life pretty miserable, to be honest.“I had surgery. The shoulder was put back into place and I have a pin in my arm, some screws in my shoulder and an implant as well, which is going to stay there for the foreseeable future. It will probably stay that way for as long as I am riding.“It has been a long road to recovery, and I still have quite a while to go. But the only goal I had after the injury was to get ready for the new season. I am race-ready, and I have the strength and mobility I need. I feel good on the bike, so that’s all that matters for now.”<img src="https://eventrack-1.ams3.digitaloceanspaces.com/staging/434465/conversions/Michelsen0894-large.jpg"/>Michelsen admits the long recovery time before he could step up his rehabilitation was hugely frustrating. “It took some time to cope and get over it – the idea of not making progress,” he said. “I was just thinking, ‘ah, I’ll have surgery and in three or four weeks, I’ll be back in the gym and doing everything I normally would.’ But that wasn’t the case, so it wasn’t great.“With so much damage to the right side of my body, I couldn’t use crutches. I was stuck on the couch for quite some time. The first long while was not fun. Luckily, I have an amazing fiancée, who took great care of me, Alicja. She helped me a lot during the first period because it was kind of a struggle.“I wasn’t great company for the majority of the time as an active person, who was not able to do my normal off-season training and activities. It was hard: physically is one thing, but also mentally.“Basically, until the beginning of January, I hadn’t been doing much physical rehabilitation. It had been all about recovering after the surgery because it took a toll on my body and also the shoulder.”<img src="https://eventrack-1.ams3.digitaloceanspaces.com/staging/434479/conversions/MichelsenKvechLindgren2516-large.jpg"/>Michelsen admits his urge to get back his usual activities only grew as Poland’s pre-season training camps kicked off in the opening months of 2025.He said: “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t getting a little nervous and stressed when we were halfway through January. I had a team camp coming up with Torun. We were going to Spain and riding motocross and stuff like that. I hadn’t been on a bike since I crashed in Riga.“The good thing is I always stay in good shape. Even during the season, I work super hard. When I crashed, I was still in peak condition, which has helped me tremendously during this whole process. There have been quite a few months with minimal to zero activity.“Obviously with some things, I may have something to catch up on. But overall, I am in good condition physically. The body is working, and I feel good. I still have a lot of work to do on the shoulder when it comes to other things in life away from racing. But from a racing perspective, I am 100 percent fit, I have no limitations, and I don’t miss the strength on the bike, so that’s really good.“It’s probably going to take another year or a year and a half to get back to where I was before the accident. But for now, it’s all good and I am just happy I am back on the bike.”

MICHELSEN: FEELING GOOD ON THE BIKE AHEAD OF SPEEDWAY GP COMEBACK

Great Britain racer Dan Bewley admits it’s “an honour” to compete again five-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik for the sport’s biggest prize, but insisted “it would be very cool to beat him.”Bewley starts 2025 among the Speedway GP world title contenders when the series launches with the WWK FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut next Saturday.The Cumbrian raced to a career-best fourth place in the 2024 Speedway GP World Championship and is among the riders facing the challenge of denying Zmarzlik a record-equalling sixth world title – an unprecedented fourth in as many years.Zmarzlik has already secured his place among the sport’s all-time greats. And while Bewley loves competing against another gifted natural talent on the bike, he would also love to come out on top.The Belle Vue and Wroclaw hero said: “He’s good and he has won for the last few years, but I wouldn’t mind winning too. We will just take it race by race.“I have a lot of respect for him. I watched him when I was younger and first started. From the outside, I can see that he has got better over the years. It’s cool to race against him.“But as cool as it is to race against him, and I have a lot of respect for him, it would be very cool to beat him too. Whether that’s in a round or for the championship, there are certain riders it’s a little bit of an honour to race against, and he is in that category for me.”Zmarzlik is set to carry a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders as history beckons. But Bewley believes the Pole’s love of racing will make that burden easier to bear.He said: “I don’t know how he looks at it; it depends how much he cares what people say. I feel like the moment he has one bad meeting, people say ‘that’s it! He’s finished.’ If he reads into that, which I am sure he doesn’t, then he would have a few not-very-nice moments.“I think in a way, and in certain things, we might be a little bit similar. I think he just enjoys riding his bike too. I think he loves it, and we are pretty similar in that way.”&nbsp;

BEWLEY: HONOUR TO TAKE ON ZMARZLIK FOR SPEEDWAY GP GLORY

Danish racer Michael Jepsen Jensen starred on 13 points for Grudziadz as they stunned hosts Zielona Gora 51-39 in the PGE Ekstraliga on Friday.MJJ made a game-changing move to Grudziadz following Speedway GP star Jason Doyle’s season-ending crash in May 2024, and he has taken his red-hot form into 2025, winning three races and picking up two seconds.He was well supported by 10 paid 11 from Grudziadz teammate Jaimon Lidsey, with Speedway GP star Max Fricke adding eight paid 10 and Vadim Tarasenko scoring eight paid nine.Former Speedway GP rider Przemyslaw Pawlicki was by far Falubaz’s top scorer on 14 points against his old club, while Jaroslaw Hampel scored seven paid nine points. Cameras! Speedway! Monster Energy’s stars of Speedway GP – Freddie Lindgren, Dan Bewley and Jack Holder – are set to represent the glowing green M-claw logo for the 2025 season when the tapes rise next weekend.Collectively, the three Monster Energy SGP racers made up half of the top six finishers in 2024, with Lindgren leading the trio with a third place overall, scoring 141 points, with Bewley fourth on 127 and Holder sixth on 106.&nbsp;All three racers won one individual round during the 2024 season, with Lindgren getting his victory at round six in Gorzow, Bewley’s win coming on his home turf in Cardiff, while Holder captured his lone victory at the SGP opener in Croatia.“Monster Energy’s Freddie Lindgren, Dan Bewley and Jack Holder are driving forces in the series,” says four-time Speedway GP world champion Greg Hancock, Monster Energy’s Global Speedway Ambassador.&nbsp;“The 2025 World Championship is shaping up to be a real mix of experience and youth. And going back home to Australia and finally watching my first GP win with my mum, dad, Jess (wife) and my son was huge for me.&nbsp;“I’d waited seven long months for that moment! Now we’re going again this year. I’ve done everything possible to be ready, fit, and ready to go after what I want!”Said Hancock on Holder: “Jack Holder's natural ability aligns with the Holder family traits. Poland’s former world No.2 Patryk Dudek takes his place in the world’s biggest speedway event as wild card for the PZM FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw at PGE Narodowy on May 17.Dudek wears the No.16 race jacket as he joins five-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik and Dominik Kubera in flying the white and red flag on Poland’s grandest sporting stage.Torun rider Dudek is this year’s Speedway GP second substitute rider and appeared in two SGP events as a wild card in 2024, scoring 12 points and reaching the semi-finals in both <a href="https://www.fimspeedway.com/results/2024-dewalt-fim-speedway-gp-of-poland-wroclaw">Wroclaw</a> and <a href="https://www.fimspeedway.com/results/2024-dewalt-fim-speedway-gp-of-poland-torun">Torun</a>.The three-time SGP winner famously finished second in the Speedway GP World Championship in 2017, becoming the first rider to reach the SGP top two in their debut season.Dudek is a regular member of the Polish national side and has an incredible record in the FIM Speedway World Cup, winning gold on all four of his Final appearances in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2023. POLISH STAR DUDEK’S WARSAW DATE

Triple Speedway GP world champion Tai Woffinden played down suggestions of a rapid racing return, insisting “I’m just taking it one day at a time.”Woffinden suffered multiple fractures and was airlifted to hospital when he crashed in Polish club Rzeszow’s sparring match away to Krosno on March 30.The Great Britain hero, who spent five days in an induced coma, has been released from hospital and is now setting out on the road to recovery.While Woffinden is renowned as one of the sport’s most determined characters, he admits he has no comeback date in mind at this stage, despite media speculation of possible return dates.Posting on Facebook, he wrote: “My days are so up and down! I have delt with a broken bone here and there, but what I have done this time around, it’s a whole different level!&nbsp;“So many different injuries at the same time! I haven’t had a full night’s sleep since I was in the coma. I have read a few articles regarding me coming back. You have to understand that I always set myself a goal because it gives me something to chase.“Currently I have no date. I’m just taking it one day at a time.&nbsp;"I need time to readjust and let my body heal. Thanks so much for all your support. I see it and hear it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

WOFFINDEN: ONE DAY AT A TIME

Danish racer Leon Madsen is targeting a record-equalling third Speedway European Championship crown as he bids for an instant Speedway GP return for 2026.Madsen serves as this season’s SGP first reserve and was gutted to have missed out on a full place in the line-up after finishing ninth in 2024 and being overlooked for a permanent wild card by the SGP Commission.The 2018 and 2022 European champion is determined to take matters into his own hands in 2025 as he targets SEC gold, which would guarantee his place in next season’s Speedway GP series.Last year’s SEC runner-up Madsen will compete in the four-round continental series, which visits Polish club Bydgoszcz on July 12, German venue Gustrow on July 26, Polish city Leszno on August 23 and Czech track Pardubice on the opening night of their Golden Helmet weekend on September 19.And Madsen believes winning an SEC series, which also features SGP stars Andzejs Lebedevs and Anders Thomsen, is his best way of securing an immediate Speedway GP comeback.He said: “All my focus is to do the very best I can do in all the meetings I race, and obviously in the European Championship. I think the competition in the European Championship is quite hard now. It’s up there with the GP because it is also a qualifier to the GP.“There is a smaller room for error with only four rounds. But I have won it twice before and had silver too, so I know what I have to do, and I am up for it because I want to get back into the GP.&nbsp;“I want to get back in as fast as possible. I don’t want to sit out for a few years. My age is also catching up on me. I am 36 now – 37 at the end of the year.“It was not fun to get the message that I wouldn’t be part of it this year, but I have kind of accepted it now. I don’t know how to say it, but I have kind of embraced the time off and I’ll take all the advantage of it that I can, so that I can get back into the GP next year stronger.“I will try and win the European Championship and if not, I’ll do the very best I can in all of the meetings I do, so hopefully when we come to the end of the season, the GP people will look my way for next year with the wild cards if I need one.”Madsen has another outside chance of punching his SGP ticket. He will be called into action in Speedway GP this season if any of the 15 permanent riders are forced out of a round due to injury, illness or other reasons.If he races the vast majority of the 10 rounds, it’s not impossible that he could finish in the World Championship’s top seven, which would guarantee him a place in the 2026 series.Asked about his chances during the recent SGP media day in Warsaw, Madsen declared: “If you give me seven or eight GPs, I will be in there for sure when the season finishes. But I am not thinking about racing in the GP this year because then somebody would have to get injured, and you don’t hope for that.”

MADSEN SEEKS SEC CROWN TO PUNCH 2026 SPEEDWAY GP TICKET

SGP2 champions Mateusz Cierniak and Wiktor Przyjemski are among the stars who will fight for their place in the Polish Championship series in 2025.The young guns have both booked their spot in the Polish Championship Challenge, which takes place in Pila on May 10. The top eight riders secure places in the Polish Championship series, which visits Torun (June 19), Ostrow (July 19) and Czestochowa (August 15).Cierniak and Przyjemski are joined in the Pila qualifier by former Speedway GP riders Przemyslaw and Piotr Pawlicki, Pawel Przedpelski and Szymon Wozniak, as well as 2021 FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion Jakub Miskowiak.Former Speedway European Championship bronze medallist Kacper Woryna, the in-form Grzegorz Zengota, Krzysztof Buczkowski, Gleb Chugunov, Oskar Fajfer, Jakub Jamrog, Marcin Nowak, Adrian Cyfer and former SGP3 star Kacper Mania complete the Polish Championship Challenge field.Speedway GP stars Bartosz Zmarzlik and Dominik Kubera have already booked places in the series, along with reigning champion Maciej Janowski and Speedway GP second substitute Patryk Dudek, who was third last year. They are joined in gaining automatic qualification by 2024 SGP2 rider Jakub Krawczyk – the reigning Polish Under-21 champion.Polish team manager Rafal Dobrucki will nominate two series wild cards for the competition, and the line-up for each round will be completed by one further one-day wild card.
